    19 Celebrity Lies You Believed

Whoopi Goldberg’s real name is Caryn Johnson, but she farted so often that people said she was like a whoopee cushion. That’s why she changed it.

We asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which lies, tricks, and dupes from famous actors completely caught them off guard. Here are the wild results.

Whoopi Goldberg’s real name is actually Caryn Johnson, but she passed gas so often that people kept saying she was like a whoopee cushion, so she changed her name.

Whoopi’s mom said that no one would take her seriously if she used “Whoopi Cushion” as her stage name. She suggested adopting “Goldberg” from her side of the family to use instead. The rest was history.

Mandy Moore was nearly nine months pregnant while filming Season 5’s most recent episodes of This Is Us. They had her carrying random props and wearing big, flowy sweaters to cover the baby bump.

    Suggested by noradominick

Production on this current season of This Is Us has been so delayed because of COVID-19 that they’ve actually had to postpone episode airdates. The cast and crew have worked tirelessly to safely film new scenes and edit everything (sometimes finishing the exact day the episode aired). These delays made it increasingly difficult to hide Mandy Moore’s growing baby bump.

Saoirse Ronan is actually American and was born in New York, despite having an Irish accent, but all three of her sisters in Little Women were played by non-American actors.

    Sony Pictures Releasing

    Suggested by johnmichaelw

Saoirse Ronan played Jo March and was born in the Bronx to Irish parents, and they moved to Dublin when she was 3.

Emma Watson played Meg March and was born in Paris and lived there until she was 5, then moved to England.

Florence Pugh played Amy March and was born in Oxford, England, moved to Spain when she was 3, and then moved back to Oxford at the age of 6.

And Eliza Scanlen played Beth March and was born and raised in Sydney, New South Wales.

Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey absolutely hatedddd each other while filming Dirty Dancing, so that onscreen chemistry was literally just them acting their butts off.

    Vestron Pictures

    Suggested by juliaworsdorfer

The feud between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey actually started a few years prior, when they filmed the movie Red Dawn. Their personalities just didn’t mesh well, and Swayze would often be annoyed at pretty much everything Grey did. That’s why she didn’t want him cast opposite her in Dirty Dancing.

They’d often argue on set, Swayze would get frustrated, and Grey would end up crying. She explained their relationship like this: “His fearlessness with my fearfulness…together was like a marriage where you have two opposites. He’d do anything, and I’d be scared to do anything.”

Even though Jessica Biel played the oldest sister on 7th Heaven, her onscreen sister Beverley Mitchell was actually older than her in real life.

    The WB

    Suggested by briawilson

Jessica Biel played Mary Camden and was born on March 3, 1982. Beverley Mitchell played her younger sister and was born on Jan. 22, 1981.

Dr. Phil isn’t a real doctor, and he’s not a licensed psychologist.

    Fox News

    Suggested by tessafahey

Dr. Phil is not a medical doctor. He actually got into some hot water a few years ago because he became a paid spokesperson for a diabetes drug, and since he’s not an actual physician, people said it looked like the company was touting Dr. Phil to legitimize their drug.

He has a PhD in clinical psychology, but he’s not a licensed psychologist. As a result, people have started referring to him as “Mr. Phil,” especially after he went on Fox News and stated several false claims and statistics about the coronavirus.

The Michael Myers face mask from Halloween is just a Captain Kirk/William Shatner face mask that’s painted white.

    Compass International / NBC

    Suggested by djb415

William Shatner even admitted to going trick-or-treating one year while wearing the Michael Meyers mask of his own face.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Keira Knightley were actually only five years apart while filming Love Actually. He played a 10-year-old, and she played a married woman.

    Universal Pictures

    Suggested by kbd0190

The movie was released in November 2003. Keira Knightley was born in March 1985, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster was born in May 1990.

Humphrey Bogart was two inches shorter than Ingrid Bergman, so he wore platform shoes, stood on boxes, and sat on cushions to appear taller than her in Casablanca.

The character of Thackery Binx in Hocus Pocus was actually played by two different actors.

    Buena Vista Pictures

    Suggested by clizvega

Sean Murray played the live character of Thackery Binx, but Jason Marsden voiced the cat. According to Marsden, they dubbed in his voice because Murray’s sounded a bit too contemporary: “After the movie evolved, they thought it would be more realistic, since the witches come from this time period, that Binx should also have an affected accent.”

Elvis Presley was actually a natural blonde. His personal hairstylist, Larry Geller, would dye it every two to three weeks to keep it black and shiny.

Rami Malek wasn’t actually singing in Bohemian Rhapsody. They just used old tapes of Freddie Mercury or had other people sing for him.

    CBS /, 20th Century Fox

    Suggested by jamiem43

Malek spent countless hours prepping for the role, mimicking Mercury’s moves and speaking with a fake overbite, but according to Rolling Stone magazine, “One thing he couldn’t re-create was Mercury’s singing voice. Most singing scenes in the movie rely on either vocal stems from Queen master tapes or new recordings by Marc Martel, a Canadian Christian rock singer whose voice is practically identical to the late frontman’s.”

And even though Jennifer Lopez had to sing in her audition for Selena, they didn’t even use her real singing voice in the movie. She simply lip-synched everything.

Julie Bowen was 8.5 months pregnant with twins while filming the pilot episode for Modern Family.

    Suggested by Jon Dennis, Facebook

Despite being only two weeks away from giving birth to twins, the show successfully hid her stomach by having her carry things like laundry baskets and towels during random scenes.

Toni Collette isn’t actually American. She’s Australian.

“She’s extremely convincing when it comes to different accents. For the longest time, I was convinced that she was actually American, until I saw an article that mentioned she’s actually Australian. It blew my mind.”

Instead of using makeup to make Geena Davis look older in A League of Their Own, they actually hired someone else to play Old Dottie and dubbed her voice.

    Columbia Pictures

    Suggested by Julie Kennedy, Facebook

Most movies just use makeup or special effects to age a character on screen, but for this one they hired Lynn Cartwright to play Old Dottie. They simply dubbed her voice with Geena Davis’s in post-production.

Young Simba from The Lion King was also played by two different actors. Jonathan Taylor Thomas provided the speaking voice, and Jason Weaver provided the singing voice.

    ABC, The WB

    Suggested by taylorowens

You probably know Jason Weaver best as Marcus Henderson in Smart Guy or as Michael Jackson in The Jacksons: An American Dream, but in the early ’90s, he was the uncredited singing voice for Young Simba.

Weaver revealed that Disney originally offered him $2 million to supply Young Simba’s singing voice, but his mother knew the power of Disney and insisted on a royalties deal. They settled on $100,000 plus royalties, and over time he’s made back well more than that initial $2 million.

Phylicia Rashad was pregnant during Season 3 of The Cosby Show, and it became a running gag to see what ridiculous props they could use to cover her baby bump.

    Suggested by tessafahey
