A petition to keep Trump off Facebook has become a main focus for activists.
The Meta Oversight Board made the decision to remove Trump from Facebook in the beginning of 2021.
At that time the company explained, “Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr. Trump’s suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols,” said Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice-president of global affairs, in a statement.
“We are suspending his accounts for two years, effective from the date of the initial suspension on January 7 this year.”
The former President Trump spoke out about the two-year ban saying, “Facebook’s ruling is an insult to the record-setting 75m people, plus many others, who voted for us in the 2020 Rigged Presidential Election,” Trump said in a statement on Friday. “They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this censoring and silencing, and ultimately, we will win. Our Country can’t take this abuse anymore!”
Additionally, Trump alluded to a 2024 presidential run.
“Next time I’m in the White House there will be no more dinners, at his request, with Mark Zuckerberg and his wife,” he said. “It will be all business!”
But some media activists set up a petition to keep Trump off of Facebook.
The companies wrote, Donald Trump was booted from several social media platforms following the January 6th Insurrection at the Capitol. While Twitter has permanently banned Trump, Facebook’s ban remains subject to appeal to the Facebook Oversight Board. They explained, a team of 20 experts from around the world.
Trump has appealed the ban to the Oversight Board, which now has 90 days to decide whether to overturn it. The board has only heard five appeals so far but did overturn Facebook’s ban in four of those.
We’ve witnessed the devastating impact of Trump’s tweets. They continued, lives lost on January 6, and years of fanning the flames of hate and division. We cannot risk reinvigorating Trump and his toxic message while the country attempts to pick up our fragile pieces. If a man can incite a riot with his words, then the benefit of taking away his megaphone is obvious and immediate.
The petition made change with 16,410 signatures.
