Zimbabweans are reportedly outraged over the death of a 14-year-old girl.
The girl named Memory Machaya is said to have died on July 15, 2021 at a church shrine in the eastern region of Marange.
Her death only came to public notice on Saturday, August 7, 2021.
The United Nations has condemned her death, saying in a statement that the UN “notes with deep concern” and “condemns strongly” reports into the circumstances surrounding the death.
On Saturday, August 7, 2021, UN indicated that “The current trend of unresolved cases of violence against women and girls in Zimbabwe, including marriages of minors, cannot continue with impunity.”
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean police have reportedly launched an investigation into the death of the girl who was said to have been forced to abandon school to get married.
An online petition has been opened and it is dubbed “justice for Memory Machaya.”
The petition sighted by African Entertainment on www.change.org has garnered over 75,000 signatures.
