Biden defends decision to pull US soldiers out of Afghanistan

    Joe Biden

US President,  Joe Biden,  has defended his decision to pull American soldiers out of Afghanistan.

A day after Taliban militants seized control of Afghanistan,  President Biden says the decision taken 20 years ago to send US soldiers to Afghanistan was never meant to be about “nation building” or “creating a unified, central democracy”.

He said sending US soldiers to Afghanistan was a plan designed to prevent a terrorist attack on American soil.

Some five people have reportedly been killed at
Kabul airport. Thousands of people had reportedly tried to flee the country.

In videos sighted by African Entertainment on social media, some Afghans tried hang on to departing planes – forcing the flights to be grounded.

Over 60 couhtries have served a joint statement,  asking the Taliban to allow individuals to exit.

But President Biden in his defiant tweet sighted by African Entertainment, says “We went to Afghanistan almost 20 years ago with clear goals: get those who attacked us on September 11, 2001—and make sure al Qaeda could not use Afghanistan as a base from which to attack us again. We did that—a decade ago.”

“Our mission was never supposed to be nation building,” he added.
