Fight continues as Caldor Fire jumps Highway 50, threatening more homes

Highway 50 now an evacuation zone. As the cal door fire continues to rage to the northeast. The road now free of tourists and residents heading to Lake Tahoe, we see first responders and PG and E. Cruz instead. Some parked under the orange sky. Others patrolling the highway through the heavy smoke kippers is now a ghost town. They’re fully evacuated here and that’s probably for the best. We just check the A. Q. I. Index the air quality score and it’s showing very unhealthy levels of air quality. We’re out in front of the fire at the moment as you can see, it’s really smoky and the wind is really picking up resources now called in from other states to fight the flames. This is Engine Captain Will Burke’s second day on the fire line. His team is from Idaho, this is the biggest fire that we’ve been on this season. For sure. Burke is working to protect the town of strawberry. A popular stop for tourists now completely empty. You know what are some of the challenges that you’re foreseeing today? It’s been such a chaotic environment. It’s just spread so fast outside of that. It’s in such remote, rugged terrain that’s hard to access. And our best strategy at this point is just to try to stay ahead of it and protect all the, the human infrastructure that it’s in its way and the winds are continuing to pick up in this area. It’s sending down a lot of ash and also this these are big burned, pieces of bark, they almost look metallic. This happens to be um priority fire for as far as the nation’s concerned, all hands on death to keep the cal door fire from spreading any further. Mhm. Okay.
