Inside Chanel and Sofia Coppola’s ‘Archive’ Book Party with Kirsten Dunst – The Music news

Sofia Coppola took a seat at New York’s Bookmarc on Sunday to sign copies of her first book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. The event inspired hundreds to hit the sidewalk and queue up for hours in a line that snaked through the West Village streets while fans waited for their chance to meet the filmmaker and snag an autograph. “It was so nice to meet so many young kids that were all dressed up and excited,” Coppola told The Music news on Tuesday night moments after she arrived to a different kind of scene at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont.

There were plenty of youthful attendees, albeit more famous, and everyone was fashionably suited courtesy of Chanel, which hosted the event to celebrate Coppola’s new tome and toast their longtime ambassador, collaborator and friend. But the only line that formed was the one in front of the stage where Maya Rudolph rocked out alongside Gretchen Lieberum while performing Prince hits with their cover band Princess. More on that later.

The West Coast gathering followed a dinner hosted by Chanel and W in New York at Indochine on Sept. 14. Guests like Elle Fanning, Marc Jacobs, Laura Dern and Margaret Qualley played four rounds of Chanel bingo emceed by Saturday Night Live star Chloe Fineman. “That party was very New York and this one feels very L.A.,” Coppola said in trying to compare the vibes. “It’s just really fun to reconnect with my friends and a lot of my collaborators that are in the book. Part of doing a book in the first place was to get to share the work of all the great people I’ve worked with over the years. I’m happy to celebrate them tonight and see some old friends.”

It’s easy to characterize the event as a family reunion of sorts as the description typically works for so many fashion to-dos, but it works perfectly for what went down last night. Coppola, like fellow attendee Kristen Stewart, has been close with Chanel so long that she’s basically family now. Her associations with the house date back to an internship at 15, and she has since collaborated with Chanel professionally, both for her films and theirs in promotional videos and campaigns. Most recently, Chanel, which has an even longer history of supporting cinema, recreated the wedding dress Cailee Spaeny’s Priscilla Presley wears when she weds Jacob Elordi’s Elvis Presley in a scene for Coppola’s newest effort Priscilla, out Nov. 3.

Coppola’s actual relatives made the rounds, including husband Thomas Mars and niece Gia Coppola (with husband Honor Titus), as did the members of her extended film family. In the room were Presley and muse Kirsten Dunst (with husband Jesse Plemons) who starred in Coppola’s 1999 directorial debut The Virgin Suicides and 2006 period piece Marie Antoinette. Elle Fanning, one of the stars of Coppola’s 2017 pic The Beguiled, arrived late and hung out with older sister Dakota Fanning. Rashida Jones, who teamed with Bill Murray for Coppola’s 2020 dramedy On the Rocks, was in the building, joined by longtime partner Ezra Koenig. Jones spent time chatting about children with new mom Paris Hilton, who arrived with her cousin.

There were plenty of couples in the Chateau’s garden courtyard, too. John Mulaney and Olivia Munn posed for their first event photos together as a couple. They spent time with Cleo Wade and her filmmaker beau Simon Kinberg. Also there: Kelly Lynch with screenwriter husband Mitch Glazer, and Zoey Grossman and Robert Schwartzman. Speaking of debuts, Rudolph arrived with Pearl Minnie Anderson, her 17-year-old daughter with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, and she explained to photographers that it was their first time hitting a carpet together.

About Archive. For years, every time Coppola wrapped a film, she saved everything that went into the production — inspiration, drawings, revised scripts, letters, photographs, anything of creative value — and stuffed it all into boxes. “When I was younger, it all sorta seemed like junk,” she recently told Vogue.  “I would just throw everything into a corner and never really think about it again.”

But a global pandemic, and hours of uninterrupted free time, allowed her to wrap her brain around all that stuff and, more importantly, the time to sift through it for the sake of a book. What she came up with, in partnership with MACK and designers Joseph Logan and Anamaria Morris, spans her career over the previous seven films and the upcoming biopic Priscilla about the relationship between Priscilla and Elvis Presley. Coppola has said that she wanted the 488-page art book to feel less like a coffee table book and more a scrapbook but read like a formative guide for young filmmakers on how to make films. Again, to Vogue, she said, “I love to see artists in their creative spaces, so for me this book is like the closest version of visiting my office and seeing all the stuff piled up around my desk.”

Thinking back on what she accomplished, Coppola told THR, “It was a lot of work. It was more work than I anticipated.” The only effort left for the night was a brief speech to thank Chanel and the many guests in attendance, including a special shout out to Dunst. She then introduced Rudolph and Lieberum who performed a rousing set for the well-heeled crowd. The night ended in a dance party as Coppola, Dunst and the Fanning sisters were among those who showed off their moves to the music before calling it a night with a copy of Archive tucked under their arms.
