Kelis went to social media to explain it wasn’t all Beyonce that she was furious at. When it came to her song “Get along With You” being sampled on the new “Renaissance” album she blames Pharrell and Chad.
The “Kaleidoscope” artist blames the scrutiny mainly on Pharrell.
In 2020 the “Milkshake” artist explained that Pharrell and The Neptunes stole from her.
“I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do,” she says. Instead, she says, she was “blatantly lied to and tricked”. She pointed specifically to “the Neptunes and their management and their lawyers and all that stuff”. As a result, she says she made nothing from sales of her first two albums, which were produced by the Neptunes. But she did not notice for a few years, because she was making money from touring, “and just the fact that I wasn’t poor felt like enough”, she says. She sighs: “Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it.’ I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’” (The Guardian reached out to Pharrell and Hugo but they did not respond to repeated requests for comment.)
And they were your friends, so you trusted them, I say.
“Yeah, it’s amazing,” she shrugs.
She doesn’t sound angry. “No, I’m just stating the facts,” she says. I ask why she isn’t angry.
Fast forward to 2022. Kelis explained that Pharrell and Chad intentionally sampled the song without contacting her. Referring to the “Happy” song artist Kelis claims Pharrell is hypocritical. “He has writing credits on my records, all my singles coincidentally, and he ain’t never wrote a song, a lyric a day in his life.”
Is Kelis mad at Beyonce?
She responded saying, “The reality is that my real beef is not only with Beyoncé because at the end of the day she’s sampled a record, she’s copied me before.. it’s fine.
“It’s not about me being mad at Beyonce. She is one issue because it was stupid and disrespectful, and she should have at least reached out.”
