Kelis has grown on Google searches since Beyonce’s Renaissance album. But the latest news now states she is being removed.
Just two days after Beyoncé changed the lyrics to the song “Heated” to remove a term considered an ableist slur, she has tweaked another of the album’s 16 tracks.
“Energy” will now sound a little different, after Beyoncé removed a sample of “Milkshake” by Kelis.
The original version of “Energy” featured an interpolation from “Milkshake”. Additionally, Beyoncé sang a variation of the iconic “La-la, la-la, la”. This has been removed.
Kelis went to social media to explain it wasn’t all Beyonce that she was furious at. When it came to her song “Get along With You” being sampled on the new “Renaissance” album she blames Pharrell and Chad.
The “Kaleidoscope” artist blames the scrutiny mainly on Pharrell.
In 2020 the “Milkshake” artist explained that Pharrell and The Neptunes stole from her.
“I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do,” she says. Instead, she says, she was “blatantly lied to and tricked”. She pointed specifically to “the Neptunes and their management and their lawyers and all that stuff”. As a result, she says she made nothing from sales of her first two albums. Both albums were produced by the Neptunes. But she did not notice for a few years, because she was making money from touring, “and just the fact that I wasn’t poor felt like enough”, she says. She sighs: “Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it.’ I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’” (The Guardian reached out to Pharrell and Hugo but they did not respond to repeated requests for comment.)
Since Beyonce’s Renaissance album the search term for Kelis reached it’s highest in the last five years.
