Kwame Nkrumah – a legacy that looks back and not forward?

Kwame Nkrumah was an exceptional leader no doubt, his vision for Ghana as the country’s first president is unparalleled. He had his flaws yes, that only makes him human. However, I have been thinking on this auspicious day if he’d have wanted us to be that country that’s always looking back rather than looking to the future?

Let’s face it, Ghana has been on a decline in a lot of sectors for a long time and we’ve been losing our place on the league of African nations for a while now. Whereas we’ve been first in a lot of things in sub Saharan Africa in the past, our decline as a nation has been going on for a while.

Take for instance the area of Comms research, we’re not doing very well as a country. In fact we are not among the big names in Comms research in Africa; and we’ve not been in a while. The glory days have been over for a while now and we need to come to terms with it and ask ourselves some tough questions.

Will Nkrumah have wanted us to be where we are as a country now? We need to move on.

Nkrumah was great but seeing as he was a visionary, wouldn’t he have wanted us to be deliberate about raising the next generation of Nkrumahs? Selfless leaders who have the country at heart rather than their political parties?
Today, let’s reflect on how we can be the Nkrumah in our communities and spheres of influence.
Nkrumah lives on and indeed must but may I submit that he’d have wanted us to look forward to individual and personal leadership that furthers the interests of Ghana?
