LINDENHURST, Long Island (WABC) — An investigation is underway after a student was stabbed in the leg by another student at a middle school on Long Island.

The stabbing happened Monday in a hallway at Lindenhurst Middle School on South Wellwood Avenue before 12:30 p.m.

Police say a 13-year-old male student was stabbed in his groin area with a six-inch knife. The victim was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after losing a lot of blood.

A security guard used a tourniquet to save him.

The student is said to be critical but stable.

The building went into lockdown and a 12-year-old student was taken into police custody.

Some students said they saw the two boys fighting.

“I was in the hallway and then I saw my science teacher with a kid and the kid was leaving a trail of blood on the floor,” said student Andy Pinargote.

Parents panicked and feared the worst when they were notified the school went into lockdown during the investigation.

It all happened after three students and three staff members were shot and killed inside a private elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee.

“You send your kids off to school thinking they’re going to have a good day and this occurs, it’s concerning as a parent,” one father said.

It’s not yet clear what the students were fighting about.
