MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) — Five people have been taken into custody after a teen was shot in a bustling part of Midtown, Manhattan Tuesday night.
The shooting happened just after 10 p.m. on 44th Street and 8th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen.
Police say a 16-year-old was shot in the shoulder. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where he is expected to fully recover.
Witnesses who were dining at Sardi’s Restaurant near the scene saw a shocking scene unfold. Many believed the shooting was actually just a Halloween prank.
“It kinda looked like it was a staged thing because we didn’t see anybody in a big panic. But then we see people running, we see this guy down, and then the police show up. And we realize this is really happening,” one witness said.
One shell casing was recovered from the scene.
Police arrived quickly at the scene and grabbed five teens wearing masks and hoodies who were running away near 46th Street and 9th Avenue. Authorities believe the shooting was a result of two groups of teens involved in a dispute.
Among those teens, an 18-year-old suspect is expected to be charged later Wednesday morning.
