Premier League players now allowed to travel to Covid-19 red-list nations

Footballers in the English Premier League are now reportedly going to be allowed to travel to Covid-19 red-list nations for the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers scheduled for this month.

But the players are only to be allowed to travel if they are fully vaccinated.

Reports say footballers who are to travel for international duties will be required to adhere to a strict code of conduct regarding transport, close contacts, testing and bubbles.

Upon their return to the United Kingdom, they are to quarantine in “bespoke facilities” for 10 days, reports the BBC.

BBC quoted an unnamed British Government spokesperson as saying “We have worked closely with football authorities to achieve an outcome that balances the interests of both club and country while maintaining the highest levels of public health and safety.”

“Our best defence against the virus is vaccination and these new measures will allow fully vaccinated players to fulfil their international duties in the safest, most practical way possible, while allowing them to train and play with their clubs as early as possible upon their return.”

The UK government’s Covid-19 restrictions caused confusion during the international break in September.

The Premier League had taken a decision not to release players.

The decision of the Premier League resulted in a fight with FIFA.  FIFA had asked that players be allowed to travel and play.

However, Aston Villa and Tottenham defiantly refuse to allow their Argentina internationals to represent their country for their World Cup qualifiers in South America, resulting to farcical scenes at the Brazil v Argentina game in Sao Paulo.
