“[I asked] God to send me a sign.”
Solange is thankful for everything she’s learned from her 2019 album, When I Get Home. She celebrated the project’s two-year anniversary by recalling how it made her a better person.
“When I first started creating When I Get Home, I was quite literally fighting for my life … in and out of hospitals … with depleting health and broken spirits asking God to send me a sign [that] I would not only survive, but that if he let me make it out alive, I would step into the light, whatever that meant,” she recalled on Instagram.
“He [began] speaking to me,” Solange continued. “Half the time I didn’t know where it was coming from. I only knew I had to open the door and honor it.”
The “Almeda” musician said that when she created the last track on her album, “I’m a Witness,” she “didn’t know who [she] was speaking to.”
However, the song — which was a message about growth — made her feel something different the last time she played it.
“When I listen back, I hear a woman who had only an inkling of what the journey entailed, but didn’t have a clue of why or what the journey would look like,” Solange said. “This project has shown me [that] once you open that door, you can’t go backward.”
“Believe me, I’ve tried saying ‘Nah I’m just playing,’ so many times. Ha,” she continued. “I’m not a big fan of talking about shit I don’t know yet. I didn’t do much talking during this time because of that.”
One day, Solange said she’ll tell her fans all about the “great divine joy and love” that she’s experienced since she created When I Get Home. But for now, she’s going to continue making music that “answers questions within [her].”
Solange has a lot to say. I can’t wait to hear what she comes out with next.
