Many underestimate just how restorative a staycation in your own backyard can be. The opportunity to become an explorer in your own city — or perhaps in another city — while taking in the amenities of a lavish hotel presents the chance for you to be one with yourself, or spend quality time with a loved one.

Washington D.C. for example, is a perfect city for those looking to take in the sights, sounds and scenery, while also indulging in some R&R. From tons of new restaurants, to brand new hotels, to frequented tourist destinations such as Navy Yard, The Wharf and City Center, there’s much to be desired.

So when presented with the opportunity to take in a staycation at the semi-newish Thompson Washington D.C., I jumped at the chance. Not only is it a beloved hotel chain for leisure travelers everywhere, its location, amenities and service tell everything there is to know about why it’s earned it’s 5 star rating. The chain, which opened in January of 2020,  features 208 rooms and 17 suites set over 11 floors featuring a mix of weathered wood, glass and marble. For those looking to visit the nation’s capital anytime soon — and why wouldn’t you — here’s why the Thompson should be ranked high on your list.

    The Room

If I could order the beds at The Thompson for use in my own home, I would. The room, which is as cozy as it is functional, lends for at least one day to be spent in bed. And that’s not a bad thing either, especially if you want to take the staycation experience to the max. They’re not too shabby in terms of space, either. Offering beds, a desk and comfortable sofa seating, there’s plenty to be done here, whether it’s for work or for play. Also, no matter what room you’re in, there’s plenty of natural light to shine in, which is a must for me, in order to let in some sunshine.

    The Location

Anyone who’s been to D.C. over the years knows just how much development has taken place since the city used to be adorned as “Chocolate City.” And because all change isn’t bad, Navy Yard has quickly become a hotspot for locals and tourists alike. At the backdrop: beautiful waterfront, plenty of restaurants within walking distance, a scenic bike path, and of course, the Thompson. Guests can bike along the Anacostia River Trail, make a stop at a nearby Smithsonian museum – or two, and shop along one of D.C.’s hottest neighborhoods. Capitol Hill is less than a mile away and minutes from the nation’s most famous monuments and museums. This hotel is perfect for a sophisticated East Coast road trip, educational escapes, design lovers, and those looking to experience a new lens on DC. Also, if you’re looking to visit some museums while you’re in town, or popular attractions such as the National Mall, MLK Memorial or Lincoln Memorial, they’re all within reach — just a short 5-10 minute drive away. Here, you get the best of both worlds, without having to sacrifice on any must-haves on your travel wish list.

    The Food

If I’d say there was a downside — just one — it was the lack of food choices when I was on property (because, like most things this past year, COVID put a damper on it). Unfortunately, room service wasn’t available, and breakfast consisted of coffee and croissants. The fine-dining, Roman-style trattoria restaurant Maialino Mare, has since reopened with Executive Chef Rose Noel at the helm, bringing back several opening favorites like her Fettucine con Gamberi and Maialino Al Forno. On the bright side, they partner with many restaurants in the area (seriously, they’re so close), so I enjoyed a fantastic meal and some accompanying wine at District Winery which is just 2-3 minutes away by foot. The stunning rooftop bar by USHG, Anchovy Social, has also officially reopened and the menu features cocktails such as our Pontile Pouch, Palumbus and Zucca Spritz, as well as light bites like our Anchovy Toast with Burrata and Smoked Trout Dip.

    The Service

Seriously, customer service can make or break your entire experience anywhere. So when it comes to service, friendliness and overall willingness to help from the Thompson’s hotel staff, it’s a 10/10. From the moment I walked through the hotel doors, to when I checked out two days later, I was greeted with a smile and the desire to make my hotel stay incredible. That goes from recommendations from staff on best restaurants in the area, to willingness to assist with luggage to the hotel’s seamless check in. The Thompson sure knows a thing or two about luxury.

    The Amenities

So the best thing about Thompson is that DC is its backyard. But if you’re looking for even more than that, the property has a fitness center, rooftop overlooking the city, and partnerships with some amazing activities, such as SOULEX Float Spa. SOULEX is dedicated to providing a unique environment for relaxation and stress reduction which enables you to achieve a balanced life. Their pods were born out of a longing for a hygienic floating experience.
