Uganda, South Sudan to patrol Nimule-Juba highway after killing of 30 traders, drivers

South Sudan and Uganda have reached an agreement to ensure police patrol on the Nimule-Juba highway.

Local media reports in Uganda say the agreement was reached after drivers and travellers were recently attacked and killed on Nimule-Juba highway.

The drivers were allegedly murdered by unknown militia.

Reports say the killings caused cross-border drivers from East African countries to go on strike last week, protesting against insecurity.

The First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda, Rebecca Kadaga, in local media reports monitored by African Entertainment, assured that there will be police checks every 10km (6 miles) along the route.

Reports say some 30 traders and lorry drivers from across East Africa have been killed on the road in 2021. An estimated 1,000 lorries from across the region have been forced to stop at the main crossing point along the Nimule-Juba highway.
