Why NDC Remains the dominant political party in Savanna Region

It’s been about a month since the Supreme Court on March 4, 2021, affirmed the election of President Nana Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

And it is now appropriate to understand which party, per the 2020 certified election results, remain a dominant force in each of the 16 regions of Ghana.

I will start with the Savanna Region and continue with the remaining 15 regions in the coming days and weeks.

Going by the Electoral Commission’s certified results from the December 7, 2021 elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections in 2020.

The NPP had hoped to win the region which was carved out of the Northern Region.

But at the end of the day, the NDC won four constituencies out of seven, leaving the NPP with three.

NDC won Bole Bamboi, Salaga South.

Also, the opposition party won Sawla Tuna Kalba and Yapei-Kusawgu.

NPP secured Daboya Mankarigu, Damango, and Salaga North.

All the seven constituencies in the Savannah Region are largely dominated by non-Akan speaking people.

The presidential election results showed incumbent president Nana Akufo-Addo garnered 80,605 in the Savanna Region against former President John Mahama’s 144,244, a vote difference of 63,639.

Christian Kwabena Andrews of Ghana Union Movement came third in the Savanna Region with 1,409 votes in the presidential election.

This shows that the NDC remains the dominant political force in the Savanna region.

Becoming a dominant party in the Savanna Region In 2024, would require some hard work from the NPP, considering the gap between the ruling party and the opposition NDC presidential election results for Savanna Region for 2020.
