A Canadian businessman, Michael Spavor, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison in China for spying.
According to local media reports, the Chinese court ruled that Spavor would also be deported.
Spavor is reportedly a Beijing-based businessman. African Entertainment gathered from local media reports that he regularly travels to North Korea.
It would be recalled that in December 2018, Spavor was detained alongside Canadian Michael Kovrig.
They were detained after the chief financial officer of Chinese tech giant Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested in Vancouver, Canada over allegations that Huawei violated United States sanctions on Iran.
The Dandong Intermediate People’s Court in a statement Wednesday, August 11, 2021, says Spavor was found guilty of spying and illegally providing state secrets to foreign countries.
According to the court, Spavor would also be deported.
However, there was no indication from the court as to whether Spavor would be deported before or after serving his prison sentence.
