A Congolese lawmaker has presented a bill in the country’s Parliament, proposing a separate dowry payment for city girls and their village counterparts.
Local media reports say MP Daniel Mbau has through the bill proposed a dowry payment of $500 for city girls and $200 for village girls.
He is reported to have told his colleague lawmakers that the present high dowry price of between $2,000 and above was causing many young people to avoid lawfully marrying.
The situation, he reportedly resulting in a significant number of rapes.
He is also reported to have said that youth unemployment in Congo was high and that the youth do not have money to pay high dowry.
