Halle Bailey Ariel role on it’s way, and much anticipated for 2023
The 22-year-old featured in the latest @Variety spread dishing on playing the highly anticipated role of Ariel.
Although she received some backlash for it in the beginning she got the kudos from the original Ariel, Jodi Benson
Benson said, “We have, as a family, raised our children and for ourselves that we don’t see anything that’s different on the outside. I think that the spirit of a character is what really matters. What you bring to the table in a character as far as their heart and their spirit is what really counts.”
She continued to say, “We need to be storytellers,”
“And no matter what we look like on the outside, no matter our race, our nation, the color of our skin, our dialect, whether I’m tall or thin.” She continued, “whether I’m overweight or underweight, or my hair is whatever color, we really need to tell the story.”
When deciding on playing the role Halle Bailey told Variety that she started to think about how her younger self would have been inspired if the cartoon version of Ariel had been a person of color. “What that would have done for me, how that would have changed my confidence, my belief in myself, everything,” Bailey says. “Things that seem so small to everyone else, it’s so big to us.”
