‘Shark Tank’ Co-host Barbara Corcoran Apologizes for Joking About Whoopi Goldberg’s Weight, Social Media Unmoved

“Shark Tank” star Barbara Corcoran has issued an apology after joking about Whoopi Goldberg’s weight during a recent appearance on “The View.”

The awkward moment occurred while the hosts of the reality competition show were promoting their upcoming season with guest panelist Emma Grede, the co-founder and CEO of Good American denim; it’s important to note that Grede became the first Black female guest on “Shark Tank.”

While discussing the apparel, an intrigued Goldberg said, “Well, I have to try them,” before jokingly asking, “Will they fit this COVID…?” “View” co-host Sunny Hostin answered, “Yes, Yes they will.” while fellow show star Ana Navarro added, “They fit this COVID…” Corcoran, seemingly eager to join in on the banter, chimed in, “When you get finished with those jeans and decide you don’t like them, give them to me, I’m gonna make two pairs.”

Goldberg immediately turned her head away, visibly stunned by what she had just heard; groans from the studio audience ensued almost immediately. However, Navarro quickly came to Goldberb’s defense, pointing out that the dress Corcoran was wearing was seen on First Lady Jill Biden and journalist Sara Haines on television already.

Corcoran has since apologized for her statement in a video clip, expressing to viewers that she had “just came back from ‘The View’ and saw my old friend Whoopi.” She added, “She has a phenomenal sense of humor, and I’ve known Whoopi for years. I made a joke at Whoopi’s expense, which I now realize wasn’t funny.”

She concluded, “For anyone who I may have offended unintentionally, I just wanted to say I really am very sorry.” Goldberg responded to the message, writing, “Barbara we have been friends forever and I know your humor, I knew you were kidding.”

Still, folks on social media don’t appear to be too sold on Corcoran’s apology. Many critics on social media accused Corcoran of not issuing a sincere apology, including one Twitter user who wrote, “I think it would b better if u didn’t have your hand on your face as if u were discussing a film you’d just seen.”

That person added, “Also, u “blamed” Whoopi 4 your comment by mentioning she has a terrific sense of humour. Having a sense of humour does not mean u can say anything u want. #BeBetter.”

Another person commented, “To those I may of offended’ is not an apology. It lends responsibility on the listener and implies they may be the one lacking a sense of humor. Take full responsibility and lead with only yourself.”
