Boko Haram frees Chibok schoolgirl after 7 years of captivity

Islamic militants group, Boko Haram, has set free one of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls in Nigeria.

Local media reports say Ruth Ngladar Pogu was released to the Nigerian military on July 28, 2021 along with a man she had married in captivity.

However, Nigerian government officials are reported to have said they withheld the announcement of her release from captivity to give them time to contact her parents and other families of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls.

The office of the governor of Borno state in northern Nigeria is reported to have announced the release of Ruth over the weekend.

About 300 schoolgirls were kidnapped in the town of Chibok some seven years ago.

Reports say at least 100 schoolgirls are still missing.
