The governing body of world’s football, FIFA, has urged the emergency evacuation of female footballers from conflict-hit Afghanistan.
FIFA made the appeal in letters written to a number of governments.
According to reports, the female players have expressed profound fear for their lives following the Taliban’s takeover of the Afghanistan capital Kabul.
FIFA has indicated that it was working with governments to establish an evacuation plan.
According to the Association, “The ambition is to bring as many people to safety as possible.”
Local media reports in Afghanistan revealed that ex-Afghanistan national women’s team captain Khalida Popal has pleaded with sporting bodies to “help get our players safe.”
Reports say she made the appeal because she fears for those left behind under the Taliban rule.
She was quoted also by “I have not been able to sleep, I have been crying and feeling helpless.”
In a statement, FIFA stated “The situation in Afghanistan remains unstable and very worrying.
“We remain in contact with the Afghanistan Football Federation, and other stakeholders, and continue to receive updates from players in the country,” FIFA says.
