Sudan approves bill to join ICC

Sudan has approved a new bill to join the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Prime Minister, Abdalla Hamdok, announced this in a tweet on Tuesday, August 3, 2021.

He said the bill has been approved by Sudan’s transitional cabinet.

According to Mr Hamdok, “Justice and accountability are the backbone of the new Sudan, which is committed to the rule of law that we all seek to build.”

When Sudan joins ICC, former President Omar al-Bashir, might be tried at the Hague-based court for alleged crimes against humanity in Sudan, especially the Darfur region.

A transitional civilian-led administration has been ruling Sudan since August 2019.
