What Disease Did Gilbert Gottfried Have and Can you Prevent It

Gilbert Gottfried transitioned at the age of 67 years old

What disease did Gilbert Gottfried have?

According to his family the comedian battled with ventricular tachycardia for a while.

His publicist and friend Glenn Schwartz stated that myotonic dystrophy type 2 caused the ventricular tachycardia disease.

Tuesday’s statement via Gilbert Gottfried’s Twitter was released.

They wrote, “In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor.”

    What is ventricular tachycardia?

According to Mayoclinic, ventricular tachycardia is a heart rhythm problem (arrhythmia) caused by irregular electrical signals in the lower chambers of the heart (ventricles).  V-tach or VT may occur as a result.

Basically, the heart beats about 40 times faster than the normal heartbeat of 60 times per minute.

However, some may experience this rapid heartbeat in brief episodes with no issue. Unfortunately, when the episodes become more constant it can be life threatening.

What is myotonic dystrophy type 2?

This disease is an inherited muscular dystrophy disease. As a result, muscles are not able to relax properly.

According to Raredisease, people with this condition often have prolonged muscle contractions (myotonia) and are not able to relax certain muscles after use. For example, a person may have difficulty releasing their grip on a doorknob or handle.

Signs of this disease begin in the range of 20 to 30 years old.

    Prevention

It isn’t abnormal to ask, how to prevent this disorder. As for myotonic dystrophy, it is genetic. Therefore, it can start at birth. This typically runs in families of European descent, and effects 10 out of 100,000.

Nevertheless, there are ways to work towards living a normal life with myotonic dystrophy. Weight management, staying hydrated, protecting lungs and heart, and healthy eating are vital.

As for ventricular tachycardia the best ways are to maintain a healthy heart, if possible. Nevertheless, if it is already present regular heart monitoring and prescribed medication is important to maintaining a normal life.
